Movie Review: Antakshari

In recent past, there were numerous attempts to make no-nonsense crime thrillers in India. Some good police procedural and mystery dramas came out, but in case of making a decent serial killer thriller, Indian cinema has been largely a disappointment! A major reason is the absence of the element of shock in order to make the genre convenient for Indian audiences. Some efforts from the south came lately, but their over the top treatment made the end product rather funny!

In continuation to the search for a tidy and dexterous serial killing psycho thriller; I came across this 'easy to be missed' Malayalam flick with almost no expectations; but this little piece of blaze blew me!

The unconventional pattern of storytelling created an initial abstract structure which later turned into a near perfect genre film. The screenplay slowly injected it's elements of shock which set a haunting, eerie ambience through out the runtime. The anticipation of the horror brings the fusion of David Fincher-ish film making in a Korean thriller backdrop!

Antakshari is an example of out and out smart movie-writing where each event makes the audience more restless. It is benefitted hugely by a technically sound cast and crew. The unorthodox score and the spectral sound design and the cinematography deserve special mention. The portrayal of the characters, mostly grey shaded, was brilliant along with the precise mood setting by a consummate flashback.

Not following the pathway of its predecessor, this Vipin Das directorial managed to become a remarkable genre film with the potential to inspire more filmmakers to shift from their zone of comfort. Among the best of the year, already...
