Movie Review: X = Prem [2022]

X = PREM by Srijit Mukherji

Someone had to start this somewhere; Srijit did it neatly if not aptly. Attempting a cinema of this zone in regional circuit consists of huge risk as thousands of mammoth works already has been done at global level and it's almost impossible to escape the inevitable influences. The movie did well by mentioning it's nearest potential predecessor beforehand and also announced it's intent to go one step forward. Though it is baseless to compare it with that masterpiece, I appreciate the fact that X = Prem tried to create it's own space.

Inspite of the fascinating hue of sci-fi all over, X = Prem is a love story at its core, a love poetry rather. As the dimension of romance have been shifting it's trajectory continuously, it was quite a challenge to serve something fresh devoid of the already seen cringey elements. It succeeded in this purpose atleast in some extent if not completely.

Technically too, it was not a disappointment. The decision to colour the movie in B/W proved to be a clever one to match the idiosyncrasy of it's theme. Subhankar Bhar's cinematography was satisfying for most of the time. Indraadip dasgupta's sharp score provided the required tension masterfully. Music of X = Prem deserves every attention of the world. The hauntingly alluring 'Bhalobasar Morshum' is not going to fade anytime soon. Saptak Sanai Das is a talent to watch.

In order to create compatibility with the audience, the screenplay becomes repetitive at points and sacrifices it's pace for unnecessary things. Also the purpose becomes confusing some times due to the uneven topography of the narration. The movie didn't explore some interesting pathways further and this superficial approach affected the appeal of the movie in a negative way. The underwhelming third act failed to bring the memory of the magical showdown, which Srijit did earlier several times.

X = Prem is not flawless. But there is every reasons to appreciate the endeavour. If you avoid it now, don't complain later about lack of experiment in our language...
